Application Migration to Azure

This case study highlights how MindCraft successfully transitioned a leading direct life insurer in Singapore, a subsidiary of one of the world’s largest insurance companies, to a secure and scalable cloud environment on Azure. The client faced ongoing challenges with managing infrastructure upgrades and provisioning new hardware to meet the growing demands of their Term and Endowment policy applications.

MindCraft conducted an in-depth analysis of the client’s applications, usage patterns, and compliance with MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore) guidelines, ultimately recommending a move to Azure Cloud. The proposed architecture, based on Azure best practices, was meticulously designed, reviewed with the client’s technology, compliance, and security teams, and then seamlessly implemented.

The transition to Azure Cloud resulted in significant benefits for the client, including enhanced security, scalability, and business continuity. By using Azure services for Active Directory, Role-based Access Control, databases, and storage, and implementing robust security measures like Azure Firewall, WAF, and CIS benchmarked VM images, the client achieved full compliance and audit clearance. The insurer now enjoys the ability to scale resources effortlessly during peak business periods, with zero downtime during the migration process.

The client is a direct life insurer in Singapore and is the fully owned subsidiary of one of the largest insurance companies in the world. The client offers a range of Term and Endowment policies.
Given the constant need to manage infrastructure upgrades and provisioning of new hardware keeping in line with increasing requirements of applications, the customer wished to move his applications to a secure cloud environment that would withstand any security, scalability, business continuity and audit challenges.
To address the client’s challenges of managing infrastructure upgrades and ensuring the security, scalability, and business continuity of their applications, MindCraft designed and implemented a comprehensive cloud migration strategy to Azure.

MindCraft conducted a thorough study of Applications, usage patterns, technology platforms and budgetary restrictions of the client, and proposed a move to Azure Cloud. After analyzing applicable MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore) guidelines, an application architecture based on Azure best practices was conceived and presented to the client. This analysis was crucial in understanding the specific requirements and limitations of the client, enabling the development of a tailored solution that aligned with both their business goals and regulatory obligations.

Post discussions with the client’s technology, compliance and security teams, the architecture was finalized and implemented. This architecture leveraged Azure’s best practices.

The design focused on providing a secure, scalable, and highly available environment. Key components of the architecture included:
  • Generalized VM Images that were created following CIS (Center for Internet Security) security benchmarks, ensuring that all virtual machines were configured to the highest security standards.
  • VM Scale Sets were implemented to automatically manage, and scale virtual machines based on demand, providing the client with the flexibility to handle varying workloads without manual intervention.
  • The client’s website was migrated to Azure Front Door, a global load balancing service that also provided enhanced performance and security.
  • For load balancing at the application level, Azure Application Gateway was utilized, which also included a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to protect against common web vulnerabilities and attacks.
  • The solution also included automated alerts and notifications to keep the client informed of any critical issues or required actions, ensuring smooth operations and continuous availability.
  • Azure's database services were used to manage the client’s data, ensuring that it was stored securely and was easily accessible.
  • Azure Storage provided scalable and durable storage options for the client’s data, supporting the needs of the application without the need for manual intervention.
  • CIS Security Benchmarks were applied across all VMs to ensure that the infrastructure met stringent security standards, further protecting against potential vulnerabilities.
  • Azure’s built-in monitoring and management tools provided the client with full visibility into their application environment, helping to identify and resolve issues proactively.
  • The architecture was designed with business continuity in mind, ensuring that the client’s applications remained available even during unexpected outages or peak demand periods.

Implementation of Azure Firewall, WAF, and CIS benchmarked VM images ensured robust security and compliance with MAS guidelines.

The client was able to effortlessly scale resources during peak business periods without hardware constraints.

The seamless transition to Azure ensured zero downtime, maintaining uninterrupted service.

All audits were successfully cleared, providing full visibility and regulatory adherence.
